Message from the Director
Brown’s unique collaborative culture helped build the fields of brain-machine interfaces, it places us at the forefront of computational brain science and modern AI, and it fosters novel approaches to neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s, neurodevelopmental disorders and many other conditions that effect the brain and nervous system.
Whether you study with us, teach with us, discover with us, or invest in us, you become part of a campus community of over 200 faculty and hundreds of undergraduates, graduate students, and post-doctoral seekers and scholars – all focused on the extraordinary power and vulnerability of the brain.
It’s a special team. Through Carney, you can connect and collaborate with geneticists and mathematicians, computer scientists and engineers, cognitive neuroscientists and surgeons, neuroscientists and neurologists, physicists and philosophers. Each brings a unique lens to brain science and, true to Brown, a special blend of creativity and purpose to advance knowledge and to make a difference in people’s lives.
The innovations and discoveries of the Carney community add to our understanding of how the brain develops and ages, how it perceives, attends, learns, and stores and recalls memories– and turns those discoveries into drugs and devices, software and start-up companies that improve human health and society.
We’re here to make an impact – and we’re succeeding.
Brown’s unique collaborative culture helped build the fields of brain-machine interfaces, it places us at the forefront of computational brain science and modern AI, and it fosters novel approaches to neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s, neurodevelopmental disorders and many other conditions that affect the brain and nervous system.
Carney provides the ingredients needed to speed scientific discovery and innovation at all career stages: support for idea generation, research funding to test novel ideas, and access to state of the art research facilities.
I hope you will join us in the rewarding pursuit of knowledge about the brain and help us turn it into new ways to learn, to invent and to heal.
