Robert J. and Nancy D. Carney Institute for Brain Science

Our Impact

The Carney Institute creates an environment that allows Brown University faculty, postdocs and students to innovate, create and advance knowledge in brain science without constraint. The institute supports research, training and outreach to benefit more than 200 faculty members from 20 academic and clinical units at Brown, as well as undergraduates, graduate students, postdoctoral scientists and other researchers.

Discovery that Benefits Humanity

Brown brain scientists are field leaders and field builders and have:

  • Created tools and technologies designed to answer key questions about the brain that are used in thousands of brain science labs worldwide
  • Made major contributions to our understanding of key brain functions such as vision, memory and cognition as well as the molecular drivers of diseases and disorders from Alzheimer’s disease to autism
  • Launched the field of neurotechnology and are now shaping new fields like computational psychiatry and next-generation brain sensing
  • Made critical contributions to artificial intelligence, using science about the brain to develop and test machine learning models, and using machine learning methods to investigate the brain
  • Written “Neuroscience: Exploring the Brain,” a leading college textbook moving into its fifth edition and translated into six languages
  • Taught and trained hundreds of brain science leaders working in industry labs, government agencies and top universities and medical centers around the world
