Statement on Diversity
Inclusive Scientific Community
We know that the highest quality of research and scholarship are central to meeting these challenges, both of which depend upon engaging talented scientists from across disciplines and embracing their contributions in a fully inclusive community. We also recognize that many people have been, and continue to be, shut out from these conversations because of their race, gender, religion, sexuality, national origin, socioeconomic background, and learning differences.
Brown University is working to build a community of faculty, staff, postdocs, and students that looks like the world around us. At Carney, this means we’re creating a place where outstanding scientists who reflect our diverse society are nurtured, invested in, and supported whether they’re in the classroom, the lab or online.
At Carney, we’re working to realize this pledge in real time through efforts including:
- The Advancing Research Careers (ARC) program which supports an annual cohort of participants through mentorship, research support, and activities that contribute to successful neuroscience research careers
- Our BrainExPo series, a platform for early-career scientists to share their research and network with Carney's brain science community
- Carney’s Graduate Awards in Brain Science which recognize early-career scientists who make outstanding research progress and demonstrate strong potential for successful, lifelong scientific careers
- NIH funded T32 training programs — including ICoN and TPCP — which provide pivotal support to students at graduate and postdoctoral career stages
- The Summer Scholars Program, a world-class, hands-on training initiative providing opportunities in computational brain science to a diverse cohort of undergraduates
Carney is committed to this long-term effort and we know there is much more work to be done. We invite you to reach out to us and play an active role as we strive to foster an environment of true inclusion, belonging, and collaboration.
