Sanes elected treasurer of IBRO

The International Brain Research Organization (IBRO), the global federation of neuroscience organizations, has elected Brown University professor Jerome Sanes as its treasurer, a title he will assume in January 2020.

Sanes headshotSanes will serve as IBRO treasurer for three years, and he will continue serving as associate editor-in-chief of IBRO’s flagship journal Neuroscience.

“I am honored to have become elected as IBRO’s treasurer, a role that entails budgeting significant funds to support educational and research opportunities for IBRO’s five regional committees that span the globe,” said Sanes, professor of neuroscience, director of the Carney Institute COBRE Center for Central Nervous System Function and founding director of Carney’s MRI Research Facility.

“It’s gratifying to continue IBRO support for myriad activities in South America, Africa and less developed countries in Asia,” added Sanes, who is also director of the Neuroimaging Core of the Center for Neurorestoration and Neurotechnology at the Providence Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

Sanes received his Ph.D. in Neuroscience from the University of Rochester and completed his postdoctoral training in the Laboratory of Neurophysiology at the National Institute of Mental Health with Dr. Edward V. Evarts. He also became a special expert and senior staff fellow at the U.S. National Institutes of Health before joining Brown University in 1991 as the scientific director of the former Parkinson’s Disease and Motor Disorders Unit. He has held international positions in Germany, Italy and France.
