2019: What a year!

2019 has been spectacular for the Robert J. and Nancy D. Carney Institute for Brain Science because of contributions from members of our community.

A message from Carney Institute Director Diane Lipscombe:

Professors doing researc h2019 has been spectacular for the Robert J. and Nancy D. Carney Institute for Brain Science because of contributions from members of our community.

We moved into a new collaborative research and administrative space in January at 164 Angell St., which houses computational neuroscience and neuroengineering labs. The fourth floor of 164 Angell has become a community hub for Carney workshops, events, or just a place to work.

In collaboration with the Brown Institute for Translational Science, we launched the new Center for Translational Neuroscience, directed by Eric Morrow and co-directed by Judy Liu. We also appointed Gilad Barnea director of our Center for the Neurobiology of Cells and Circuits, which has established Carney’s reputation for excellence in molecular, cellular and circuit neuroscience.

We welcomed Jason Ritt, Carney's scientific director of quantitative neuroscience and research assistant professor of neuroscience, and we also welcomed into the Center for Translational Neuroscience Gregorio Valdez, associate professor of molecular biology, cell biology and biochemistry, and Alvin Huang, GLF Translational Assistant Professor of Molecular Biology, Cell Biology and Biochemistry.

Ensuring that great ideas get critical early funding, we supported our fifth year of high-impact research projects from across the brain science community, and we also increased support for graduate and undergraduate research.

An interdisciplinary team of Carney researchers and their partners received $6.3 million in DARPA funding to develop and test a device aimed at restoring function following spinal cord injury and this is one of so many funding successes.

If you are curious about what’s going on, we have an active social media presence on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram, and regular updates and events listed on our website.

Thank you all for contributing to the institute’s many successes in 2019.
