Brain networks: Inferring cortical microcircuitry with electrophysiology

Research Projects

Neurons connected

Existing technology cannot directly measure the synaptic connectivity between individual brain cells in awake, behaving mammals. Nevertheless, the spiking electrical activity of ensembles of brain cells provides an indirect signal for measuring properties of this connectivity.

In collaboration with researchers at CUNY and NYU, Carney-affiliated faculty member Matthew Harrison is exploring novel statistical tools for inferring synaptic connectivity from electrophysiological data.
